Materials for the basic hotel rooms

As I said at the beginning, this is a very flexible project. You get to choose how many rooms you make, how you arrange them (more on that in the next section) and which bead size you use.

So, I'm going to start by giving you a rough materials list. This is just for the hotel rooms portion of the project (the photo above shows one set of rooms...you can make as many as you want for your hotel). You can find detailed lists for each portion of the project in each PDF.

Your first choice: bead size

Now, you will need Delica (or other Cylinder beads, e.g., TOHO AIKO) for this project. But I have created the design so that you can choose which size you use. So, this will accommodate both varieties of bee made in size 11 or size 15 beads - whichever you decided to go for.

I am using size 10/0 delicas because I find the slightly larger size is easier to work with when it comes to any 'fiddly' corners. But it's not essential. If you can't get hold of size 10/0 easily, or if you simply don't want to use them, then you can use size 11/0.

Just please AVOID the rounded seed beads for the structure. They won't 'clip' together as well and you will end up with floppy rooms and a struggle to get the hotel to support itself.

So, here are the bead quantities PER ROOM...so that is the quantity required to make the structure you see in the photo:

  • Size 10/0 Delicas 39g
  • Size 11/0 Delicas 24g

(In case you are wondering the difference in quantity is because the larger size has fewer beads per gram).

Your second choice: colour

Now, this is entirely up to you. I have decided to use honey-coloured beads for my hotel base. But you might want to do something different.

I am also planning on using different shades of (vaguely) honey-colours. I think this will add interest to the design and it will also create some variety for me as I bead each room. So, you will have seen in the video that I had made a tiny start on the second hotel room and am using a different shade for that.

It's entirely up to you whether you do the same or keep to just a single colour for all of your rooms.

Budget may be a factor. If you can buy wholesale packs of beads, then it might be that it makes sense to keep to a single colour and make multiple rooms from one pack of beads.

So, there's no 'right' or 'wrong' in this.

Remember, we are also going to be embellishing the whole structure with flowers and leaves. So, there could be an argument for using shades of green for your hotel. Just throwing that out there as another suggestion.

Or, go your own way completely and use something really different.

If you are going to use honey-coloured shades, then let me give you a few suggestions...

  • The beads in the photo are DBM233
  • My next shade is DBM204
  • Another option is DBM852
  • Or, for a different look, try the Picasso finish of DBM2262

You can also try colour codes that are either side of those suggestions (e.g., 205). The same colours should apply for size 11 - your code will just be DB and then the colour number, rather than 'DBM'. If you need more information on how Delica colour codes work, then check out this blog.

If you have colour code suggestions to share with the group, then please leave them in the comments down below.

Your third choice: how many rooms?

Now, you don't have to decide this right now. But just bear in mind, you will need to get enough beads to make multiple rooms if that is what you wish to do.

The embellishment on the doors

You will also have noticed that I added some embellishment to each of the room doors. For this, I used size 11 seed beads and forget-me-not beads.

Now, you can use any kind of flowers. The ones I used are about 5mm in size, so anything similar will work fine. Or, you can just use ordinary seed beads and stitch flowers using daisy chain stitch, or even just mix in some colours that don't have to be particularly like flowers. You can see some of those other options illustrated in the photo below.

So, I'm envisaging that for this part, you will be able to use beads from your stash. In fact, this kind of embellishment is a brilliant way of using up odds and ends that get left in tubes and bags after you've completed a project.

Again, you have complete flexibility with colouring here. So, you might want to start planning and experimenting with a few samples, or just leave these decisions until you get onto the project for real.

If you are working with size 11 Delicas, then you can probably still embellish with the same beads. Or, if you want to scale everything down, you could use size 15 seed beads for the embellishment.

Room Signs

I've used size 11 Delicas to make these signs. As you have various different options for the signs (given in the PDF tutorial), it's best to check out that PDF to confirm the quantity of beads you need.

If you are making your hotel rooms with size 11 Delicas, then you should use size 15 beads for the signs.

Door Numbers

I have also now added door numbers to my hotel rooms. Again, this is completely optional, but if you do want to use this option, you have some choices.

I used 7mm plastic beads with gold numbers on them.

These beads, with either gold, or black numbers, are widely available from general craft stores, or on Etsy or Ebay. You may find you need to buy a large mixed pack, though.

If you search, you will also find other styles of number bead, so that is another option.

Or, you can always bead little number signs if you wish. So, lots of options in that area!

So, that should give you a start on being able to source and gather supplies. Plenty of bead shops sell these beads. Please remember to check the individual PDF tutorials for more details.

It would be lovely if you want to share your plans in the comments below. And feel free to ask the group for their thoughts if you are struggling with ideas and not sure what to do. So, I will obviously respond to each comment myself (remember, there could be a delay, so don't worry if you don't see your comment and my response immediately). But it would also be lovely if you chat with each other too. So, if you see someone else's comment and have some thoughts about it, please add a reply and share your ideas so we can all enjoy working together.
